Night and Gold

I keep coming back to the Seraphym (can you tell she is my favorite character from SWC?)  And more Eric Whitacre.  This time it is Nox Aurumque, or “Night and Gold” which is sung in Latin.  It is a poem about an angel, weary of fighting…but here are the lyrics in English.

NOX AURUMQUE

Gold,
Tarnished and dark,
Singing of night,
Singing of death,
Singing itself to sleep.
And an angel dreams of sunrise,
And war.

Tears of the ages.
O shield!
O gilded blade!
You are too heavy to carry,
Too heavy for flight.

Gold,
Tarnished and weary,
Awaken!
Melt from weapon to wing!
Let us soar again,
High above this wall;
Angels reborn and rejoicing with wings made
Of dawn,
Of gold,
Of dream.

Gold,
Singing of wings,
Singing of shadows.

More Secret World Music

I’m getting way ahead of myself and I will probably post again at the time, but Beloved by VnV Nation is a key moment in the Seraphym and John Murdock story.

And while I am on the subject of Unnatural Issue…

This is Susanne’s “secret place” in the woods.

By the way folks, this blog is ONLY about music.  I’m not going to talk about anything else.

Beautiful Voices

Posted in Character Theme Songs on October 20th, 2010 by Mercedes Lackey

Friend of mine a while back sent me a CD full he only labeled “Beautiful Voices.”  This was one of the tracks.  It’s the “Song to the Moon” from the opera “Rusalka,” by Dvorak, a Slavic fairy tale a lot like “The Little Mermaid.  The music is glorious.   It’s usually sung in French rather than the original Czech though.

Sarah Brightman is actually doing this in proper costume for the Rusalka as well, which is a nice touch.

Here’s the translation:

Silver moon upon the deep dark sky,
Through the vast night pierce your rays.
This sleeping world you wander by,
Smiling on man’s homes and ways.
Oh moon ere past you glide, tell me,
Tell me, oh where does my loved one bide?
Oh moon ere past you glide, tell me
Tell me, oh where does my loved one bide?
Tell him, oh tell him, my silver moon,
Mine are the arms that shall hold him,
That between waking and sleeping he may
Think of the love that enfolds him,
May between waking and sleeping
Think of the love that enfolds him.
Light his path far away, light his path,
Tell him, oh tell him who does for him stay!
Human soul, should it dream of me, Let my memory wakened be.
Moon, moon, oh do not wane, do not wane,
Moon, oh moon, do not wane….

This song is particularly appropriate to Suzanne, the heroine of Unnatural Issue, that I am writing now.

Synergy

I am really excited because Dennis Lee and I just finished one of the Secret World stories I have literally been dreaming about for days.  We’ve all seen those scenes in movies where there is no sound other than the music track: well, part of this story played out in my head in exactly that manner.  The song is Illusion by VnV Nation, and so far it’s had everyone that’s read it grabbing for the Kleenex box and needing to find a spare.

Dirait-on

This is one of those songs where I just don’t pay any attention to the words.  It’s from Lauridsen’s Songs of the Roses, and is about Narcissus, but to me, the music is so tender, it always makes me think of the Seraphym from Secret World among the children, singing them lullabies.  I think I like this slightly faster version but here is a version with Lauridsen himself at the piano. The second is even more lullaby-like.

Editing, editing

Close to finishing the Secret World Podcast Book 3 (it will be done by Dragoncon) and closer to wrapping up the paper version.  You might have noticed that a lot of my chapters have songs for titles.  One I haven’t yet used (but oh, I have a place for it!) is Perpetual by VNV Nation. And there are/will be a LOT of VNV Nation songs used for titles in SWC.  It is absolutely spooky how perfect Ronan’s lyrics are for so many of the characters and stories.

Bella’s Theme

Bella Dawn Parker, that is, aka Belladonna Blue of Secret World Chronicles.  I don’t watch a lot of anime but the first time I heard this song from The Ghost In The Shell it gave me shivers, and it absolutely was Bella.

Ever wonder what an angel sounds like?

The first time I heard the third movement of Richard Harvey’s Concerto Antico, I knew that this was perfect for the Seraphym’s theme in Secret World Chronicle.
