Books in Progress
Q: I noticed on the News page it mentioned that you are doing a sequel toJames Schmitz’s Witches of Karres with Eric Flint and David Greer. I have regretted the fact that there was no sequel since the first time I read Witches of Karres and wondered how the sequel came about. Also, previously you had mentioned that you are writing a full length novel about Grey(Shades of Grey, I believe) and I wondered if it was still in the works, as ithas not been listed on the Mercedes Lackey News page. I have been looking forward to reading more about Grey since I read the short stories.
Thankyou for taking the time to answer fans’ questions.
A: The Witches sequel came about because Eric is the editor in charge ofreissuing all of the Schmitz estate; I wrote the introduction to the reissueof Agent of Vega because it was literally the first SF book I ever read, and mentioned to Eric how much I adore Witches as well. The Schmitx estategave Eric permission to write sequels to whatever works he chose, andWitches seemed obvious because everyone who has ever read it, adored it.Schmitz did intend a sequel, but there isn’t much to tell us what heintended, so we’re pretty much winging it—but it’s very much in the spiritof the original.
Eventually I believe there will be a Grey book, but at the moment, I’ve gota pile of other things to keep me busy!
